28 Days Later... (2002, UK)
In director Danny Boyle's zombie horror film and post-apocalyptic
tale of a plague, filmed with low-resolution DV (digital video) camcorders
- in a three-sectioned story that was a composite of George A. Romero's Night
of the Living Dead (1968), Dawn
of the Dead (1978), and Day
of the Dead (1985), although the zombies in this film were
very fast-moving creatures:
- in the pre-credits sequence, animal rights activists
and eco-terrorists in the UK broke into the Cambridge Primate Research
Centre - a laboratory and medical research facility where they
liberated chimpanzees from their confined quarters and cages;
unfortunately, an enraged primate whose blood was infected with
the 'rage virus' was also released and immediately lunged at and
bit the neck of one of the female activists; her eyes turned red
and she became a maniacal zombie - promoting the virus' spread
by vomiting blood and gooey bile into another person's face; an
epidemic of the highly contagious, aggression-inducing virus rapidly
spread
- in the opening scene after the title credits, 28
days later, bicycle courier Jim (Cillian Murphy) awoke from a coma
in an abandoned hospital (where he was being treated for an accident),
and wandered out to find London completely deserted and evacuated,
with haunting views of a virus-ravaged landscape

- in the first sequence of attack, after Jim entered
a church balcony, his first view was of the pews below that were
covered with rotting dead bodies; when he innocently asked: "Hello?",
a few of the corpses were jolted to life and glanced hungrily at
him; at
the same time, he was assaulted by a determined, fast-moving, arm-flailing,
infected zombie priest (Toby Sedgwick)
- other memorable attack scenes occurred in a tunnel
after getting a flat tire in Frank's (Brendan Gleeson) cab,
and during the release of infected soldier Private Mailer (Marvin
Campbell) (who had been kept chained up and under observation) in
a fortified mansion - the headquarters of perverted Major Henry West
(Christopher Eccleston) who was leading a group of renegade soldiers
in Manchester
