director William Wellman:
- the spectacular aerial photography and dogfight
scenes (shot in the air and not in a studio) - including a sequence
in which a German pilot was hit (blood spurted from his mouth)
and his plane went into a fiery tailspin
- the final battle sequence (a full-scale reconstruction
of the Battle of St. Mihiel)
- the first on-screen male-male kiss on the lips when
a handsome young soldier John "Jack" Powell (Charles "Buddy" Rogers)
placed a lingering kiss on the mouth of his dying friend David Armstrong
(Richard Arlen) in the aftermath of the battle
