Comments: I think you should add the 1936 "Show Boat" to your list of deserving films that weren't nominated for any Oscars in your Awards Goofs section. I also think that Irene Dunne, Charles Winninger and Helen Morgan should have been nominated for "Show Boat" as well as possibly Allan Jones.

Name: Joel - June 29, 1998

Comments: A wonderful achievement, this site. I could quarrel with a selection here, an analysis there, but why bother? Mostly I'm just amazed at the effort and intelligence that's gone into producing this.

Comments: I just saw The Night of the Hunter for the first time, after paying over $20 to order it. It was one of the best movies I've ever seen, but it's not one that you'll love the first time you see it - it's better when you know what to expect.

Name: Tommy - June 28, 1998

Comments: I was looking for movie posters and the Internet Movie Database led me here. I love seeing web sites devoted totally to the best movies. Keep up the good work!

Comments: I just finished watching "The Third Man" (the first time I'd ever seen it) on AMC, and was curious to learn more about it, so I logged onto the Internet; luckily a Yahoo! web search brought me to your site. I found your recap of "The Third Man" both insightful and informative. Thanks and congratulations - "Greatest Films" is a wonderful resource that I'm sure I will now use frequently to augment my movie viewing pleasure. P.S. I think a book version of your site would be great. Any publishers out there?.. Maybe Roger Ebert can help.

Comments: A "Best of The Best" in motion pictures and lots of accurate and informative data to boot. It's very easy to spend a lot of time here and not get bored. Highly recommended to those who have a love for the great cinematic motion pictures of all time.

Name: I. Blubaugh - June 26, 1998

Comments: Truly an excellent site. By far the best site on the Internet to receive thorough film analyzation. It's obvious a lot of time and hard work went into this, it's extremely well done. One suggestion however, in addition to your analysis of the movie, I think it would be interesting to read your own opinions on the film. Perhaps, what are your favorite scenes, how it's impacted you...You get the idea. Anyhow that's just my opinion, I could be wrong. Great site.

Comments: My comments aren't enlightening, only complimentary ..... Great site!

Name: Steven Gaber - June 21, 1998

Comments: Great site - second only to IMDB. Find your script summaries remarkably accurate and comprehensive. Keep up the good work. I'll be back (where's that line from?) One complaint: your greatest movie list excludes non-American movies. That seems parochial and a little ignorant.

Name: Martin Dawber - June 20, 1998

Comments: This is an cornucopia of delight! Your website is truly wonderful. I only wish that this had been around in my own youth - the text and images are excellent (where did you get such wonderful copies of the Film Posters?). You should add the cherry to the cake with some sound clips of the soundtrack music to play as the viewer reads the script. Truly excellent.

Comments: I am glad you were on the mark to bring up the clear omissions of the 100 best. I cannot believe that the American Film Institute even brainstormed such a fool notion to elect that the public, and various others who haven't any idea of what makes a good film, vote on a list to remain as the best of our unique artistry in Film. The Buster Keaton omission was a slap in the face to anyone that has the least sensibility of great filmmaking, but then they left out Vidor and Sturges. Some preservationists!!! They managed to uneducate the masses in 3 hours on CBS. And kill any important strides in giving a legacy of our American Film Heritage for the next millenium. They turned what could have been an important event in our cultural history in this country, and made it a vulgar, cheap burlesque of what should have been a memorial to honor some of our great American born and Immigrant Artists that gave us such innovations to change our entire life perspective for all time. The AFI reached it's nadir last night hooking up with network TV to show how ignorant we are about our culture. Just for the almighty dollar. Creating controversy rather than interest in our film heritage. What a shame. I just thought I would get this off my chest. If you care to respond, feel free. I tip my hat to you.

Name: Davin - June 16, 1998

Comments: You people who say Titanic should be in the top 100 are stupid morons. It is nothing but a drab and dull and used love story that happens to have good special effects. The only reason its popular is because women love that wuss Leo. The only reason it makes money is because psycho women see the movie 50 times literally. The following is a list of movies FAR better than Titanic- Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Patton, Blade Runner, Zulu, Ten Commandments, The Longest Day, Aliens, Alien, Terminator movies, Citizen Kane, Casablanca, 2001, A Clockwork Orange, Total Recall, The Shining, Beverly Hills Cop, Robocop, and Lawrence of Arabia, to name a VERY few. SO to you bozos who say Titanic should be number 1, get a life! Just because one popular star is in a movie doesn't mean it is the best ever. In fact, Titanic is probably the least worthy Oscar winner ever, and it just won because its hype was still up at Oscar time.

Comments: I think the 100 years 100 greatest movies should have included Titanic that is one of the best movies of all time!

Comments: Have neglected many household chores since discovering your wonderful & comprehensive site...But must play 'Monday Morning Quarterback' for one moment to suggest obvious omissions to your Top 200 list...-The Country Girl (Bing Crosby,William Holden,Grace Kelly) -Key Largo (Bogart, Bacall, Barrymore, EG Robinson) -The Sting (Newman & Redford omitted?!?) -The Shining (Nicholson gone mad & not on this list?) OK...it's off my chest & am heading out to mow the grass. Keep up the great work!

Comments: You have a great Web site. You should enlarge your 100 Greatest Films To add the 1947 motion picture "Forever Amber" starring Linda Darnell, Cornel Wilde and George Sanders. The motion picture was a moneymaker in 1947 and Linda Darnell gives a great performance in the title role.

Name: Wizard57 - June 09, 1998

Comments: I think your site is great, but you have missed a spectacular movie. The Longest Day was a true epic with stunning scenes and is a true masterpiece. Far better than the "epic" Titanic. Please mention it in some way as it deserves it.

Name: PSYCHO - June 09, 1998

Comments: I'm very glad you have ROMAN HOLIDAY as one of the greatest movies of all time. It's my favorite, and Audrey Hepburn is my favorite actress. But I think the quote from MY FAIR LADY is "The rain in Spain stays mainly IN the plain", not ON the plain. I'm not sure, but that doesn't really matter. I also liked the Awards Goofs. That was very truthful.

Comments: I would like it if you had more pictures from the movies at this site.

Comments: Since school is now out for the summer and I'm a teacher, I now have time to explore the net. Loved your site about GWTW. It is still my all time favorite movie. It was fun to read all of the script selections that you had at your site. Thanks for being so detailed.

Name: Drew - June 06, 1998

Comments: I'm a 17 year old who recently stumbled onto your website while I was just surfing one day. I'd like to thank you for taking the time to post your summaries of the Hundred Greatest...until I started reading them, I would never have rented a movie made before Easy Rider. But when I read Casablance, the story literally took my breath away, and when I watched the film, it was phenomenal. My only comment would be that you consider squeezing Raiders of the Lost Ark onto your list. Because it resurrected the serials of the 1930s, and spawned so many imitators, and was just a great film, I believe it deserves a place on your list.

Comments: Good site for finding information when writing a script treatment.

Name: Chase Handley - June 03, 1998

Comments: It seems like there are a few more flaws in your greatest lists than I originally expected. I have been doing some research of my own. Through numerous reviews in books and magazines that I have obtained at the library, I have discovered that several of the films on your list have failed to acheive five star ratings ( or four stars in some cases. ) Films lacking the highest possible ratings that were still awarded spots on your best lists include "Blade Runner", "Easy Rider", "Blue Velvet", "Rocky", "The Terminator", and "Terminator 2". All of those films, while good, do not match up to some of the films that in my search acheived the highest possible ratings, such as "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" and "Raiders of the Lost Ark" ( it should be on the top 100, not in the second hundred.)

Name: Ross Taylor - May 29, 1998

Comments: I would like to suggest a few deletions and additions to your 100 Greatest Films list. Deletions: The Wizard of Oz, Blade Runner, King Kong. Additions: The Terminator/Terminator 2, Aliens, The Blues Brothers.

Name: Chase Handley - May 29, 1998
Location: Metarie, LA     USA

Comments: I really enjoy your 100 Greatest movie lists. However, on Another 100, you mentioned the Terminator films, but failed to recognize a greater sci - fi classic, Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Hopefully, a simple review of the selections will result in the adding of this classic to the list.

Name: Chris - May 28, 1998
Location: San Antonio, TX     USA

Comments: I was very disappointed to see (or rather not see) Braveheart among either of your top 100s. Most undoubtedly, one of the finest films ever to grace a movie screen. Possibly a review of the lists might allow Braveheart to enter one of the lists.

Name: Marty Milton - May 23, 1998

Comments: I wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed this site. I am a fan of movies made in the 40's and 50's. My favorite director is John Ford. Have you considered adding a discussion board to this site? I would like to discuss movies with someone who is old enough to remember some of these movies or at least someone who has seen these older movies. I am getting tired of reading comments from Titanic fans who profess this movie to be the best movie ever made. Most of these people are too young to have any memories past 1990 and, of course, won't bother to see many of the older movies because they are in black & white and are just old. Anyway, nice site and I intend to visit often.

Comments: I am really enjoying your site and I loved being able to see all the posters you have here. I am curious about buying them, like another person who posted a comment here. Where do you get the photos you have on the site? Is there a poster book with all these great posters? You are doing a great job with film selection on this site. I love all the older and obscure stuff. Thanks!

Comments: It's good to see a site that is prepared to work with the dying art of film criticism. In the UK we lost our excellent (and different) version of PREMIERE magazine and are left with a shelf full of glossies that go no deeper than listing a director's name with a description of style. In the past couple of years we have seen a general dumbing down of culture with intelligent debate stifled by a new-laddism (beer, birds, soccer- all great in their place) and cinema has fallen foul of this to such an extent that audiences have to be conditioned into viewing films as anything other than mindless eye candy. It's good to find a corner of the media where this isn't the case. MW

Comments: An excellent site and with bang-on reviews. One of my all time greatest movies is 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' and your review was so evocative and so true to my own observations that it was almost as good as watching the Real McCoy. Congratulations - keep up the good work!

Name: David Gardiner - April 26, 1998

Comments: I was very impressed with this site: it's obviously run by people who love film, and I like the style of the "reviews" which seem to be more like synopses of the films with very few value judgments. This would be very useful for some purposes, e.g. serious film study, but I think I like the more value-laden style of reviewing also, and in some cases I mightn't want you to give away too much of the plot if I hadn't seen the film. My own special favourite, "The Last Picture Show", only made it to your second 100. I think it deserves to be in the first group! It's a film that I must have seen a hundred times and it still leaves me with a lump in my throat, and I still find new layers to it. I think it's the most honest film that's ever been made about America, and the only film I know that depresses and uplifts at the same time. It's an all-time masterpiece, in my opinion. I wish you all well, and intend to be a regular visitor to your site. Regards. David.

Comments: Absolutely fabulous site. I marvel at the way you have singled out the greatest movies. Just a quick pointer: Why not include " Enter the Dragon"? After all, this movie may not be that artistic but its impact on the martial arts genre is unparalleled, and wasn't Bruce Lee the first cross-over star into Hollywood? Nonetheless a dynamite site.

Comments: Read your mini-script of Top Hat, and just wanted to congratulate you on a wonderful piece of writing. Very nice, sir! Every phrase was excerpted just right to evoke the scene, and the quotes, like sips of a delicious Brandy, were perfectly apropros. I also applaud your restraint in avoiding the use of java-type noise and bouncing GIFs etc. If you don't do so already, you might consider applying your obvious talent to writing book-reviews and such for Hollywood studios. I understand they pay quite well for the services of people like yourself who can reduce large works, literary or otherwise, to easily digestible formats. Anyway, best wishes and I certainly hope to have the pleasure of reading more of your synopses, and perhaps hearing more about your future successes (eg., Best Screenplay from a web page, etc.). Respectfully, Ed Schoen

Comments: Great website. I'm a big movie fan and like everything I see here! There's so much! I've already been looking for a few hours! PS Does anyone else out there happen to like that Anthony Hopkins movie "Magic"? Or anything by Brian De Palma especially "Dressed To Kill"? Or 2001, Carrie, Heavy Metal, Midnight Cowboy, La Dolce Vita, La Strada, Sisters, Akira, Poltergeist, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Hellraiser, Psycho, Vertigo, The Deer Hunter, Born on the Fourth of July, The English Patient, Fargo, Shine, Breaking the Waves, Hamlet (1997), Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City (not really a movie but close enough)...I Love To discuss! Thank you and sorry for rambling.

Name: Victoria Wong - April 09, 1998

Comments: This is probably the best classic movie site on the web. I am appalled at the number of negative comments in this guestbook. The movies were chosen quite well, representing the golden age of movies, and also adding a few of the newer classics. Of course if it were my page, I would put ALL the Katharine Hepburn movies in, but then again, that's just a personal opinion. =) Good job.

Name: Shahbaz Nazrul - April 09, 1998

Comments: There are some flaws in your selection, in my judgment. At least I see that the list doesn't contain two great movies; namely The Sound of Music (1965) and The Shawshank Redemption (1994). Also the site should have been open for "WORLD CINEMA". In that case we must have seen some names like Seven Samurai (Kurosawa), Autumn Sonata (Ingmar Bergman) or Pather Panchali (Satyajit Ray). Anyway the site looks good.

Comments: As an avid film buff, I enjoy every visit to your site. Each time I realize how much more I need to see. However, one addition I would like is a section on foreign language films. I'm starting to become interested in some of the older foreign film classics (i.e. Eisenstein, Renoir, Kurosawa, Fellini, etc.) and would like some guidance on those. I'm pretty sure I'm not alone on this.

Comments: Why has nobody recognized the following films which are brilliant ? - The Philadelphia Experiment - Predator (Schwarzenegger CLASSIC) - Cocoon (how can you not recognize that masterpiece?) - No Way Out (the best thriller I have ever seen) - The Untouchables (De Niro classic) why is it that superb films like that don't get recognized and films like Independence Day do?

Comments: I was slightly dissapointed when I tried to look up 'Seven' in your comprehensive list of movies. I strongly agree with your list of greatest movies (and your supplemental list as well), and I don't believe that 'Seven' would fit into this category. But it has to be one of the best Film Noir movies recently made. Or Horror for that matter. I don't think a movie has come out which explores human depravity in the style that 'Seven' does and it definitely puts you on edge.

Comments: Hey! Congrats first of all to all the actors and actresses nominated for Oscars tonight. I'd just like to express my grief of Leonardo DiCaprio not being nominated for his performance in TITANIC. I'd also like to say HEY to James Cameron, born in Kapuskasing, my town for 7 years. Great job with TITANIC, it's really super!

Comments: Wonderful site! Really invigorating, going through the lists. Thank you very much for this site. It is a great site on great films. I'm also looking for two-hero films - buddy-buddy or two heroes in conflict or any genre that has two heroes - for my own reference. Can you guide me on how I could isolate such films at your site, or even through any of the search engines? (Currently, the search engines only seem to have movie titles as search criteria.) Thanks. And, please keep the good work going. It is highly and sincerely appreciated by movie buffs like me. Anjum

Comments: Wonderful site, which I discovered thanks to Yahoo's January 1998 article by Roger Ebert.. Went to see THE GODFATHER on a large screen with pristine sound last night and it was (27 years later) awesome all over again. Great films never lose their luster..A brief list of my personal favorites: GWTW, Oz, Butch Cassidy, Hot Rock, Godfather, Public Enemy, anything Charlie Chaplin ever did but especially The Kid and Modern Times. More info on my website, but you guys are doing a magnificent job! Keep up the great work!

Comments: I have been visiting your page for months, and I love it! Clean, complete, and sophisticated without overdoing it. This site holds some of my own personal memories inconspicuously- I first learned the plot of the movie It Happened One Night here before seeing it for the first time in the June of 1997. At the age of eleven, mere words had me mezmorized. Indeed, I have been a fan of old film since I was ten in the November of 1996. Now, I'm twelve. As big a fan as ever. And one of the world's youngest film historians. When my book is published, you'll understand more. The title is The Adventures of Ava and Marcy. Look for it in stores within the next two years. Bye!
